Therapy Dog Training, Testing and Certification in Lexington, Ky

By Jason Mann

Therapy dog work is an excellent way to get out there and make a positive impact on your local community. If you are interested in getting started in therapy work with your dog here are a few tips to get you started...

Tip #1: If your dog is not trained in basic obedience you'll need to take care of that before you consider getting involved in therapy dog work. We can help you with that. Click here for more information about our convenient obedience training programs.

Tip #2: Does your dog have what it takes? Be honest. If they show any form of aggression at strange sounds, sights, people, kids, other animals (including birds and cats), then you should reconsider your decision. These dogs will not do well in a therapy program. If they do not show any aggression towards these things then continue to research the topic and learn more about specific types of therapy work. We can help you with this too. Contact me at Jason@TopDogTrainingSolutions.com for more information.

Tip #3: Is your dog spayed or neutered? The only exception to this rule is if you actively show your dog in conformation. All other dogs must be spayed or neutered.

Tip #4: Are you patient? Patience is a virtue while working as a therapy dog handler. You will encounter a great many things as a handler and your ability to react with patience and be calm under stressful situation is paramount.

Tip #5: Why do you want to get involved in therapy work? Be honest with yourself and write it down. The more you know why you want to get involved the easier it will be to find the right type of therapy work for you and your dog.

Tip #6: Decide what type of work you want to do. Do you want to work with kids who have developmental disabilities? Elderly residents of nursing homes? Teenage boys or girls in the juvenile system? Adults with developmental disabilities? Children's hospitals? Or a combination of any or all of the above? It is best to find out what area you would like to devote your time to prior to getting involved. This will aid you in getting certified faster because you can research facilities to work with before you get started.

Tip #7: Do you have good people skills? As a therapy handler you will be dealing with program directors, facility directors, staff and patients. Having the ability to deal with people effectively is a plus.
